Ministry of works signage?

We took this at Hampton Court Palace while we were researching for a project. They're showing their age with some botched repairs and replacements. We assume that they were made by the Ministry of Works who would have had responsibility for Hampton Court before Historic Royal Palaces was created. We also found an example in this style hidden away at Windsor Castle. Time they were taken in hand...
